Protecting Religious Minorities in a Diverse America
My research examines how religious identity, particularly for Muslims in the United States, is subject to identity capitalism—a process where powerful groups derive social and political value from minority identities, often to the detriment of those minorities. I also apply Derrick Bell's concept of "interest convergence" to explain socio-political dynamics underlying major court decisions and suggest new avenues for lawyering and coalition-building . This work aims to develop an understanding of religious liberty that acknowledges the specific harms experienced by religious minorities when their faith-based practices conflict with majority norms.
